Weather & remarks. at 8 AM Capt [John] Grimes in the [American] Tartar fire'd a gun & announced two Sail to the WNW of us ー gave chace & Soon hear'd three Guns, which we took to be Signals ー soon after got Sight of a Single Ship which we Expected was one of the Frigates She chace'd NBE with pressd Sail

this 24 hours fine pleasant weather, but somewhat hazey, at one oClock PM Capt Manley hauled his wind towards Ipswich bar, but the Ship we were in chace of keept on to the NNE along shore as if She intended to Slip out to the Eastd of the Isle of Shoals upon which we crouded all we could to cut her off which we certainly would have Effected had She been an Enemey,
at 6 PM the Entrance of Portsmouth harbour NNW 6 miles
we were the followed by the Tartar, by young [Daniel] McEntrance & Capt [Andrew] Gardner ー 2 at 6 oClock the chace run into portsmouth and we put about and Stood to Sea
