We have been Alarmed here by the Appearance of a Fleet of about 24 Sail off Fairfield the 19th Instant Standing for that Town but did not Land their Men as was Expected, the next day they made Sail and Stood down Sound and passed New London to the Eastward the 20th about Sun Set, a deserter Informs that they are Victualling Ships bound home — the End of this Manoeuvre to cause An Alarm & distress the Inhabitants was answered . . .
