1. On 18 July the Pennsylvania Packet and the General Advertiser reported: “Last Thursday [16 July] was brought into this port, the prize schooner Lord Drummond, from Antigua, laden with rum, sugar, and limes ... [it] mounts a number of wooden and some iron guns, and was taken near the Capes of Delaware, by Captain Rice, in an armed vessel belonging to this port.” Noting that “The arrival of the above cargo has considerably lowered the price of West India produce," the report goes on to speculate that with the “late generous offers made by our magnanimous ally the King of France ... to American vessels of war, there is good reason to believe that European and West-India goods of all kinds will soon be reduced to their old prices. (A hint to monopolizers.)" Captain Rice was undoubtedly John Rice, a former Pennsylvania Navy officer then commanding the Pennsylvania privateer schooner St. John.
