Bilbao the 27th: June 1778
Honoured Sir
We have this post, Received the very pleasing satisfaction of your Esteemed lines under the 9th Instant1 & are not a little sorry to informe you, in Repply thereto, that, Capt Hodge & West2 haveing sailed hence the 18th of this month & no other American Vessell being now in port we are deprived of the opportunity of communicatting the Inteligence you Require; & Really much fear that we shall scarsely see any American with us untill the Wintter setts in—there being such pleany number of Jersey small Privateers Cruzing from Cape Ortegall down to this Port, that it is morally Imposible that any Vessell Can scape without being taken; & it is Really no small pitty that a Couple of well armed American Vessells should not be Stationed off of this port to protect the Trade.—
Our Freind at Madrid,3 haveing given us the orders you mentione upon the old plan, we have of Cource given the needfull dispositions to purchase as many Blanketts as Can be made & procured, therefore have now the pleasure to informe you that with those we have acutally in Loadge there will be Ready in a couple of months about 6000 Blanketts & the same dispositions haveing also been taken with Respect to good Strong Shoes, we have allready Engag’d for 10000 pair which will be made in avery short time; as likewise avery handsome parcell of Stockings, & In case you should think proper to order any Rigging good Russia Duck Raven’s Duck or Tent Cloath, as there is an Expeciall assortmment at present of the latter articles & the Rigging may be made with us in few days, we Can Eassily dispatch any Vessell in avery short time aGoverno—4
We hear that the Cutter Revenge Capt Cunningham putt in at Ferrol, she really is a fitt Vessell to carry alight load of the above Articles, therefore cordially wish you could give her orders to touch here to take them & proceed home—
As we are flattered with hopes that some bills on Paris may probably be accommodatted against the next post we Intend than to value on your old Account on Mr LeGrand5 for the Ballance thereof, meanwhile most Respectfully Salutting you Remmain [&c.]
