[Extract]
. . . As our Enemies are still kept at Bay on the othersidc Delaware I cannot help flattering myself with the expectation of some favourable event that will save this City. I shall certainly remain here as long as I can with safety & during my stay the Congress may depend on my utmost exertions for the Publick Service. The Randolph & Hornet are gone down this Morning. We are at Work on the Delaware & a Chartered Brige Capt Excen sails in an hour [If] they give us time I shall attempt to get the Washington Frigate into a place of Safety.
