[Carpenters Island, Pa.]
[November] 4th. Wind at West the day delightful. The Mud Battery fired at our Shipping without effect. The Ship1 with the Rebel Commodore was struck by a shot from one of our medium 12 pounders and their fleet hauled nearer the Jersey shore. The Battery began in last night left and changed to the Front Dam 90 yards nearer the Delaware. Boats come up from the Fleet with regimental Baggage and their Quarter Master.

1. Probably the Pennsylvania Navy ship Montgomery, flagship of Commodore John Hazelwood. How ever, Capt. Francis Downman's diary for this date states that the ship hit was a provision ship. Downman, "Services of Lieut.-Colonel Francis Downman," 210.
