Arrived at Dartmouth [Bedford in Dartmouth], some Time last Week, the Sloop Providence,1 John Rathburn,2 Esq; Commander, with a valuable Prize Brigantine,3 mounting 14 Guns, cut out of the Harbour of New-Providence; where he landed with 28 Men, marched up to the Fort, in Sight of 300 Men under Arms, took Possession of it; from thence, went to the Prison, released from their Confinement, about 30 American Prisoners, captured about as many British, tarried in the Town4 three Days, then made good his Retreat, without any Loss, after spiking up the Cannon, striping the Magazines of all the Powder, being about 1600 wt. &c.
