Arrived at Dartmouth [Bedford in Dartmouth], some Time last Week, the Sloop Providence,¹ John Rathburn,² Esq; Commander, with a valuable Prize Brigantine,³ mounting 14 Guns, cut out of the Harbour of New-Providence; where he landed with 28 Men, marched up to the Fort, in Sight of 300 Men under Arms, took Possession of it; from thence, went to the Prison, released from their Confinement, about 30 American Prisoners, captured about as many British, tarried in the Town⁴ three Days, then made good his Retreat, without any Loss, after spiking up the Cannon, striping the Magazines of all the Powder, being about 1600 wt. &c.
