Eliza[beth] Town 8th July 1776
[Extract]
Col [Rufus] Putnam has directed some Works for [the] defence of Eliza[beth] Town Ferry & adjacent Approaches to that Place ー No Ground from thence to Newark Bay will serve for erecting a Battery ー As for Bergen Shore the Land is proper but the Channel so Wide, that little advantage will accrue, as to guarding that Bay ー
The Boats & Can[n]on along this Shore to Amboy are removed up the Creek & secured under Guard ー
