Hawke Prison Vessel, March 9th 1777 Salem Harbour
Gentlemen
I wrote you this Morning and expected an answer I should be glad to know the reason why I am made a Prisoner. I came here as a Cartel suposed by the faith and Law of Nations, not to be violated, this I think a very great one; putting a Guard on board which has taken the Vessel into their possession ー I hold myself and the Crew your Prisoners and will not proceed till this matter is honorably and properly cleared up I shall represent the whole proceeding to Sir George Collier who will do the same to Lord and General How ー This proceeding is degrading the British Flag (upon this occasion ought to be held sacred[) ] ー I should be glad to come on shore this afternoon to see you, that in some degree this matter may be cleared up ー I am Gentlemen [&c.]
Signed T Spry
