1. Papers CC (Memorials Addressed to Congress, 1775-88), 41, III, 5-8, NA. Appended is a statement of Thomas Mifflin, Quartermaster General, dated Philadelphia, May 25, 1777, declaring: "Mr Benja Ayres [Eyre] was ordered in May last by General Washington to go to New York for the purpose of building several Callies. No Contract was made with him ー He was told he should be well paid for his Trouble. I had many Opportunities of observing his Conduct and have good Reason to say that he was very active and industrious during his Stay there."
