Arethusa in the Downes August 24th 1775.
Sir
Please to acquaint their Lordships that in consequence of Information received that the Peggy Snow Robert Martin Master was loaden with Gunpowder and arms I sent to search her and found her as represented, The Master produces a Clearance from the Custom House but no proper Permission from the Master General of the ordnance therefore I have thought proper to detain her til I know whether a Clearance from the Custom House is a sufficient Authority for me to let any Vessels pass, without further permission from the Master General of the ordnance and that I may know how to act on future occasions of the like nature I send this by Express and am &c
Digby Dent.
P:S: She is cleared out for Africa The Master says the order obtained from the Privy Council is left in the hands of his owner John Shuldram in London to whom he has wrote by this Post.
