I receiv'd yours of the 5th instant and think you are pretty well hemm'd in ー think it best you should keep your Vessel in the best posture of defence you can, and asist the Common Cause all in your power with your Sloop ー but should it so happen that you can't help falling into Enemy's hands you are to destroy the Sloop rather than let them get her ー2
You will continue thereabouts and do what Service you can until further Orders ー You may draw for any Supplys you may want ー I am Sir Your Friend &c
