Ship Marquis de la Fayette, Durif de Cazeneuve, master, 500 tons burthen, manned by a crew of 23, owned by Henry Mitchell, Francis Butler, and Thomas Barclay, of Boston, on a voyage from Sheepscot River to Nantes under French colors with masts, spars, anchor stocks, and staves. When libeled, it was claimed as a recapture on behalf of James Gildart and the estate of John Gawith, both of Liverpool. The ship had formerly been Johnson, Richard Jones, master, and while on a voyage from Liverpool to New York in Aug. 1777 had been captured by Massachusetts privateer schooner Active, Massachusetts privateer brigantine Speedwell, and Massachusetts Navy brigantine Massachusetts and sent into Salem and later Boston.
