Snowhill [N.J.] 7^th July 1778.—

Gentlemen,

Having a Furlow from Cap^t. Dunn of the Continental Navy¹ I repaired to this place where I was to stay till called to duty by your Order. This day received Intelligence by a Gentleman dispatched from a French Fleet now lying off here of their being upon the Coast. have therefore presum'd to go on board without your Orders apprehending I may be serviceable there.— I am Gent^n. [&c.]

Docketed: "Letter from Robert Martin/lieut in the Conl: Navy/Snowhill July 7. 1778/informing that being there on/furlow till called upon by Con-/gress, he has presumed without/orders to go on board the french/fleet, apprehending he may be servicable there."

1. Capt. Benjamin Dunn, formerly commander of the Continental Navy sloop Surprise, which was burned in the Delaware River in Nov. 1777 to prevent its capture by the enemy.
