Pleasant Weather, saw a Schooner to the Westwd. of us & saw the Land, bearing EbN Dist: 6 Leagues, at 1 AM wore Ship to the Nord: & stood to the Southwd. at 7 in the Morning saw Ociant1 bearing North of us, stood in for Brest & fired a Number of signal Guns, for a Pilot; Saw 3 Sail of Vessells coming out of Brest sent a Boat on Board a Schooner, which returned with a Pilot, who Carry’d on board the Ship till 4 in the Afternoon, I then sent him on Board Capt. Whipple,2 judging it most proper that Capt. Whipple should be the foreward Ship in going into the Harbour. Anchored in the Harbour of Brest at 4. OClock in the Morning.-
