at 3 [AM] Saw a fleet to the SE 1 mile distce Suppose'd it the french TKd. at 4 [saw] the fleet standg to the NE ½ Past 6 TKd. the fleet standg after a Ship to the So.wd.1 ½ Past 8 the Mermaid2 Stood out of the delaware part of the fleet Chace'd her She haul'd to the So.wd one of the fleet in Chace of us run into shoal water the Ship in Chace of us fire'd 3 Guns to bring us too but Coul'd not at Noon 18 Sail in Sight and Still in Chace of the Mermaid Cape Henlopen Light house NW 3 Miles
