Fresh Breezes & hazey at 11 AM a Sigl. was made for a French Fleet being in the Offing at 1 PM the Sigl. was made that the Fleet was standing towards to [the] Harbour. &c appear'd as intending to Enter the Harbour by the Middle & Narragansett passage weighed and Came to Sail (agreeable to Orders received for Landing all the Amunition Guns, Stores & provisions & using every Method to prevent the Ship falling into the Enemys hands or the People being made Prisioners) & work'd the Ship close in between Dyers Island and Rhode Island and Anchd in 5 fm. wt. the Best Br. Veer'd to ½ Cable No. End of Dyers Island NNW South End WbN off shore 2 Cables length [at] 3. Anchd here the Orpheus1—got on shore Two 9 pdrs: and part of our Provision
